How to get Harvard Referencing in Microsoft Word 2007
note: updated with how to add page numbers.
For most referencing the most common used is the Harvard standard and the most common used word processor used is Microsoft Word however, Microsoft Word does not come with Harvard referencing as standard. This How To is mostly sourced from here and is a shortened version to do this one task.
So, how to get Harvard referencing in Microsoft Word 2007:
- Download the 'BibWord styles' from here, listed under 'Recommended Download'.
- From that file extract the 'HarvardLeeds' file (I have found this one to cover the most of my references).
- Copy the file to to your Bibliography/Style/ folder. Something like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Bibliography\Style\
- Select the reference style in Word 2007 from the 'References' tab then Style:
- Success.
note: To add page numbers right click on the citation (or use the little blue arrow) and choose “Edit Citation”. In the little dialog that appears, you can add the page number.
It has been suggested (Moore, Estrich, McGillis, & Spelman, 1984, p. 142) that offenders ...

Your note is incorrect. Word does have a function for citing page numbers in the citation.
Rigt click on the citation (or use the little blue arrow) and choose “Edit Citation”. In the little dialog that appears, you can add the page number.
Note that you can also switch to field codes to add a prefix and suffix to the in-text citation. Check the help for the necessary flags.

Harvard citation would show (Moore et al., 1984, p. 142) instead of (Moore, Estrich, McGillis, & Spelman, 1984, p. 142). The second style is called APA.

Hi,
I’ve tried following these instructions for the Harvard system, and I can’t get it to show in Word 2007. My laptop has 2 places for MS Office – “Program Files” and “Program files (x86)”. I put the styles in the second one, because that’s the only place I could find the Bibliography and Styles folders. Any suggestions?

Huge thanks Mike! This was definitely easy to install… only took a few seconds.
Only problem I have now is that this solution gave me Harvard citations that use an ampersand (Batman & Robin, 2012) and the Harvard style I’m supposed to use doesn’t (Batman and Robin, 2012). Any suggestions?
Thanks! Karri

does this solve the problem of same authors and years converting to: (AUTHOR, 2007a; AUTHOR, 2007b) or something like that?

Hi. I followed the instructions and got Harvard Leeds into the correct folder. When I complete the fields (for a new reference) the citation comes up in capital letters.
e.g: “…and communities to reduce waste, recycle more and use resources sustainably.” (ZERO WASTE SCOTLAND, 2012)
Any idea why this is happening? (I am not using full capitals when completing the fields)
