Enable Voice to Text on the HTC Desire (Including keyboard)
*Updated to final version v.27, update for FroYo available from source if needed*
- Download 'Voice Search' from here or local, this will enable voice support
- Install the apk file on your Desire (this can be done with the free app Astro)
- Download the replacement keyboard (with mic) from local
- Install the apk file.
- Go to Settings, 'Language & keyboard' and tick 'HTC_IME mod'
- Press the search key on the Desire.
- hold down on the input box and select 'Input Method' from the popup.
- Select 'HTC_IME mod'.
- Success! select the mic icon on the keyboard to use voice to text.
note: you may like myself not like the smiley key and prefer the 'hide keyboard' key. If so,
- Go to Settings, 'Language & keyboard' and click 'HTC_IME mod' with the drop down list
- Un-tick 'Smiley hack'
- Change the input method to default and back again as the method above to save.
This new method comes from here, updates and support will likely be found there.

Thanks for the advice. Got it working then realised that when the android keyboard is in use the multi touch stops working. Pretty harsh trade off. Any advice?

Superb instructions, worked 1st time on my HTC Desire.
Much appreciated!
April 15th, 2010 - 12:11
restarting the phone should re-enable multi-touch.

Really simple and easy set of instructions, and it works perfectly on my T-mo UK HTC Desire! Thanks!

This worked almost perfectly…
But it didn’t do local contact search, it just did a web search and dictation.
My workaround was to uninstall this and install Voice Search 2.1 directly from Google http://code.google.com/p/voicesearch/
This gave me voice search, but the default HTC keyboard does not have a MIC button!
I couldn’t find a seperate APK for the default android 2.1 keyboard so I bought Uber Keyboard from the Market @ $1.49.
Now I have fully functional voice dialing, search and dictation!

Contact search can be done. Hold the search button down for a few seconds. This may work on default, will test this out later.
I have now updated with a new cleaner method that now integrates into the keyboard, like in the Nexus One.

how can i uninstall it?
the voice thing works fine, justr needed the input, not on the keyboard. how do i get everything that i dont need off?
thx a lot – great work

step 6 to 8 but choose ‘Touch Input’ instead of ‘HTC_IME mod’ to change the keyboard back.

hi guys, this worked a treat on my orange desire and my girlfriends vodafone desire! anybody got advice for using a voice app for contacts, which one to use or how to use this for contacts??
June 5th, 2010 - 15:28
Anyone not concerned by the pop during installation that says keyboard can collect keystrokes; tels, email, credit card nos ect. This app had access to just about everything on yr phone and can I assume send it somewhere without yr knowledge
Can someone confirm it does not do this
June 5th, 2010 - 16:03
I would assume this is due to having the keyboard present on all those different areas.
June 5th, 2010 - 17:34
so does it perform keyboard logging?
June 5th, 2010 - 17:38
nope.
June 5th, 2010 - 22:07
I’m really interested in how to use this app for searching/calling my contacts as well. Is this possible?
June 5th, 2010 - 22:16
This is almost a post on its own but the commands from the manual are…
Say “Call,” followed by a name from your contacts, followed by the kind of phone number (“mobile,” “work,” and so on)—for example, “Call Mike home.” If there is a single match, the number is dialed automatically.
Say “Directions to,” followed by an address, name, business name, type of business, or other destination, to get directions to that location from Google Maps.
Say “Navigate to,” followed by an address, name, business name, type of business, or other destination to get spoken, turn-by-turn directions to that destination.
Say “Map of,” followed by an address, name, business name, type of business, or other location, to view that location on Google Maps.

Hi,
I have managed to follow all the steps correctly and i have the microphone icon on the keyboard. How do i get it to recognise my voice and start typing? I have pressed the button, (currently trying to do a new text message, but nothing happens. Am i missing something obvious or do i need to install something else?
Thanks

did you install the ‘Voice Search’? It should just be the two files mentioned in this guide. If you are still having issues I suggest looking at the source link for further guidance

In fact note language and keyboard only have Spanish, French, English no Italian on HTC desire
June 16th, 2010 - 16:10

Hi AndyB, I made a post with the commands that can be used for voice searching over here The “call” command does seem to take some working at. “call mum” for example seems to get confused but “call john smith” for example works just fine.

This is great…. the only thing I am having trouble with is setting up voice dialling and searching for contacts….
Ideal would be a one touch on keyboard and speak “call dad”
Desire on t-mobile UK.
