Root HTC Desire and upgrade to Android 2.2 (Froyo)

Hi Guys, finally decided to root to get Android 2.2 and this is the simplest way to do it I Found. (everything is free and no extra hardware is needed such as a goldcard)

1. Uninstall HTC Sync and the HTC sync driver if you have them installed. (stops the root, can reinstall afterwards).

2. Download unrevoked (this roots), the 2.2 rom (the android 2.2) and the 2.2 rom radio (goes with the rom).

3. Copy the 2.2 rom (ota22.zip) and the 2.2 rom radio (32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20.zip) to your sd card.

4. Run unrevoked and follow the steps to root.

Google Voice Search Commands for HTC Desire & Nexus One

Was asked previously in another post and its useful to have the possible voice commands in one place, so:

Say “Call,” followed by a name from your contacts, followed by the kind of phone number (“mobile,” “work,” and so on)—for example, “Call Mike home.” If there is a single match, the number is dialed automatically.

Say “Directions to,” followed by an address, name, business name, type of business, or other destination, to get directions to that location from Google Maps.

Say “Navigate to,” followed by an address, name, business name, type of business, or other destination to get spoken, turn-by-turn directions to that destination.

Microsoft Word 2007 – Automaticly Add Heading Numbers

As I put the finishing touches to my dissertation I found it surprisingly difficult to auto generate heading numbers in Word.

So the process is as such:

  1. Select the right most listing button, named 'Multilevel List' (just to the right of standard Bullet and Numbering buttons)
  2. At the bottom of the popup, select 'Define New Multilevel List...'
  3. At the next popup, click the 'More > >' button at the bottom left
  4. At the top of the screen the "1.----------" is automatically selected and bold, now select the list 'Link level to style:" and select 'Heading 1'

Microsoft Word 2007 – Enable Macros and Spell Checker

I recently installed Microsoft Office 2007 and with the 10 or so possible applications I was offered to install I wanted as most people probably want, only Word and Excel. So unticked the rest. This gave me two issues. No Macros and no spell checker.

So back goes in the Microsoft Office media.

To add Macros and fix the "Macro language support is disabled" error you also need to install 'Office Shared Features >Visual Basic for Applications'

To add spell checker you need to install 'Office Shared Features >Proofing Tools'

Then all words fine :)

Google Navigation UK – how to use

Hi guys, Google Navigation went live today in the UK for Android, I didn't notice immediately it was able to be used as no update is needed and there is no obvious way to use it. So here's a short how-to to get it working.

  1. Get the latest release of Google Maps with Navigation, search for 'Google Maps' in Android Market.
  2. Go to the 'Maps' application
  3. Go to the menu, then 'Directions'
  4. Choose an 'End point'
  5. Select 'Go', then 'Navigate'
  6. Success!

How to get paid Android apps for free

The Astro File Mananger a free app on the Android Market enables you to backup your apps and appears also lets you backup paid apps BEFORE the refund period is over. Quite a large flaw in the refund scheme used in the Android Market, will keep testing as a few apps don't seem to be backupable.

1. Install Astro File Manager.
2. Purchase app.
3. In tools, application manager, backup check 'backup'.
3. Refund app.
4. The .apk install file is still in the backup directory for installing again, after the refund.
5. Free paid apps.

Free Voicemail – T-Mobile charging for voicemail on contracts

So recently I received a lovely new HTC Desire on T-Mobile UK, a couple of days later I notice T-Mobile UK are charging for using voicemail even on a contract, pretty outrageous really.

So, after googling for a good while this is the way to go to get free Voicemail, through a service called HulloMail. It's a free voicemail service that will not only be part of your contracted minutes but also email you a nice mp3 file of the voicemail left (they also do the standard calling the number).

You can sign up for free for HulloMail over here

How to get Harvard Referencing in Microsoft Word 2007

note: updated with how to add page numbers.

For most referencing the most common used is the Harvard standard and the most common used word processor used is Microsoft Word however, Microsoft Word does not come with Harvard referencing as standard. This How To is mostly sourced from here and is a shortened version to do this one task.

So, how to get Harvard referencing in Microsoft Word 2007:

  1. Download the 'BibWord styles' from here, listed under 'Recommended Download'.
  2. From that file extract the 'HarvardLeeds' file (I have found this one to cover the most of my references).
